About the image
"When I went to photograph Prince for the first time, they took me to meet him in Studio A. I was escorted in, he looked up, smiled, and thanked me for coming. He was sitting at the board mixing a song. I hadn't heard it before or since but it was slow with really sad lyrics. He said he wanted one of the shots to convey the emotions of the song and asked me what I thought. I told him I thought the song was about longing and despair. One of the ideas I had was him waiting for a call that never comes. When we started shooting it felt so real, and I felt so bad that he never got that call." -- Afshin Shahidi from his book Prince: A Private View.
