This is an original pencil & colored pencil drawing on tracing paper which served as the basis for the final design that appeared as the July, 1944 page of the Esquire Calendar. In celebration of Independence day, Alberto Vargas used this patriotic theme twice for July publications. First designed during WWII, it was the Esquire Calendar page for July 1944, and then it was updated for the July 1975 edition of Playboy Magazine.
While the piece is not dated, there are several aspects of this drawing, particularly the style of the model's hair and makeup that place this piece in the 1940s as opposed to the later version.
