Steve McQueen, Fueling the Stearman, Santa Paula Airport, CA, 1979
By Barbara McQueen
About the image
The Stearman was the first plane Steve McQueen ever owned. He bought it before he could even fly, upon seeing it in an Airplane Trader magazine. He called up the owner immediately and told him to take it off the market. Soon, Steve had a teacher and was racking up his flying hours. Steve loved every part of the aviation process - including cleaning and fueling his planes. In this photo, he stands on the vivid yellow Stearman, preparing to fuel it from above.
