Steve McQueen, Morning Paper, at Home in Santa Paula, 1978
By Barbara McQueen
About the image
The images of Steve outside his Santa Paula home in '78 were the last photographs Barbara took before Steve became seriously ill with mesothelioma. At the time, Steve's two favorite places to be was either in the hangar, riding bikes and tinkering with his planes, or in his wicker chair in his backyard. Steve would light a fire and read the newspaper for hours. It was his alone time, his version of meditation in a tough time.
