Steve McQueen in the Backyard, at Home in Santa Paula, 1978 (With Fuel Pump)

Steve sits in his favorite wicker chair set against the backdrop of a classically American barn where he stored his large collection of vintage cars and bikes. Barbara and Steve bought their Santa Paula house in ’78, making the move from Malibu to a small town of 20,000. It was here Steve felt at peace– and when they toured the 1896 house, the couple knew they’d found their home. They began remodeling at once, replacing all the modern fixtures with antiques true to the house’s period. Barbara still longed for a white-picket fence, and as soon as she left for a modelling trip to LA, Steve had one installed to surprise her.
