About the image

This photograph originally appeared as the central image on the Avalon Ballroom poster by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelly titled "Tribal Stomp". It was also published as a poster by Berkeley Bonaparte and sold in head shops nationwide, helping to define the look of the Hippies in San Francisco ahead of the "Summer of Love."

James Gurley was the lead guitarist in Big Brother and the Holding Company. Dave Getz, the band's drummer once described the poster of James, saying it "projected a persona of the spiritual Indian, with the feathers in his hair and all that. It played to the image of what Big Brother and the Holding Company was as a band."
