About the image
I have taken so many photographs of Helen Mirren over an enduring friendship of forty years that it’s been difficult to choose one. But then, Helen always was a ‘woman of infinite variety’ as one of her greatest roles, Cleopatra, while at the RSC so aptly portrayed, both as a magnificent actress and as a dear, loyal and generous friend.

I have chosen this photograph because it reminds me of a very happy time in both our lives. She was working on ‘White Nights’ directed by Taylor Hackford who later became her husband. I had just sold a screenplay to Universal (co-written with Helen) and bought a blue convertible classic Buick with fins. But Helen loved this red Mustang. She said it made her feel like “a real star” driving through the gates of Paramount!
