Jeff Beck Performing, Newport Jazz Festival, 1969
By David Redfern
About the image
On Friday, July 4, 1969, the Jeff Beck Group—featuring the legendary lineup of Jeff Beck (guitar), Rod Stewart (vocals), Ron Wood (bass), and Tony Newman (drums)—took the stage as the closing act for the Newport Jazz Festival's "An Evening of Jazz-Rock".
Promoter George Wein had decided to inject heavy British rock acts into the traditionally jazz-exclusive festival to draw younger, larger crowds. While the experiment was a massive financial success (drawing a record-breaking 25,000 fans that night alone), unfortunately due to technical issues and a mis-matched crowd, the response to the performance was a a bit lackluster.
Famously, the Jeff Beck Group broke up shortly before their planned appearance at the Woodstock Festival just a few weeks later.
