Gered Mankowitz caught up with The Rolling Stones while they were rehearsing in a "secret location" in London for their upcoming tour. The yellow walls and low lighting of the Shepperton Film Studios give the photographs from that session a distinct tone and gritty appearance.
"I had never imagined that I would work with The Stones again after their 1967 split with their manager Andrew Loog Oldham but the London Observer Magazine knew about my history with the band and asked if they would be agreeable to me shooting them for an article about their forthcoming world tour, and they agreed..." -- Gered Mankowitz
This lenticular features a layering of three separate frames capturing Keith Richards lighting a cigarette in a side profile during band rehearsals. Gered Mankowitz has always pursued new and interesting techniques in which to explore and expand his creativity. The result is a captivating artwork that creates a unique sense of animation, similar to a GIF file in three dimensions.
Release Notes:
Lenticular prints are made by combining multiple images by slicing them into thin vertical strips and interlacing them into a single composite image. This composite is then placed under a sheet of parallel lenses called lenticules. Each lens is aligned to show only one image at a time. As the viewing angle changes, the lenses magnify the strips of a different image, creating the illusion of movement or depth as the images appear to shift.
While lenticular printing has been used for novelty items like trading cards for many years, advancements in the early 2000s allowed for the creation of larger, higher-quality prints suitable for fine art.
Collector's Notes:
Gered Mankowitz has selected only a handful of his iconic images to produce as lenticular editions. Each museum-quality piece comes framed and is hand-signed and numbered on the reverse.
Buyers will receive a certificate of authenticity following delivery.
