About the image
Nelson Mandela campaigns for President of South Africa, circa 1994. The country's first multi-racial elections were held on April 27, 1994, now a public holiday in South Africa called "Freedom Day." The African National Congress party won 62% of the vote, and Mandela became the oldest elected President of South Africa when he took office at the age of 75. He remained in that position until June 1999.
