Canadian-born folk singer Joni Mitchell's fourth studio album, 1971's Blue, is widely regarded as one of the most influential of its genre. Some of her more iconic pop singles include "Big Yellow Taxi," "Free Man in Paris," and "Help Me."
"On Sept. 4, 1998, I photographed Joni Mitchell at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. I had received a call from the San Francisco Examiner‘s Sunday magazine art director to do a portrait of Joni for their upcoming cover story, as she was in town for a benefit event. Knowing I wouldn’t have much time with her, I first set up the shots needed for the cover and inside spreads shooting with my Hasselblad. Then with just a few minutes left in my shoot, I pulled out my 4×5 camera — which is much slower to work with — and positioned her near a beautiful lamppost, using my signature blue film. This portrait has since become one of the standout images in my ‘Blue Period’ collection.” -- Jay Blakesberg
