Tom Waits Sitting on Vintage Car Trunk, Sonoma County, CA, 1999

About the image
Growing up, Tom Waits developed an intense admiration for Beat writers Jack Kerouac and Charles Bukowski. That, combined with a brief stint living in his car, as well as a period where he stayed at L.A.'s Tropicana Hotel, fueled his humorous free-verse compositions (some based on overheard snippets of conversation) that earned him a loyal cult following in the early '70s.
