About the image

This series of images of Jim Morrison was shot at the "Fantasy Faire & Magic Music Festival" in Northridge, CA in July 1967. Each one was meticulously separated from individual photographs of the Doors performing and artfully combined to create an almost cinematic sequence illustrating Morrison's iconic performance style, complete with a long guttural scream at the end.

""Light My Fire” was rising to number one in America when I saw The Doors at LA’s first Rock music festival on July 15, 1967. The band performed at high noon on a surprisingly small stage. I spun on a yellow filter as I noted the unusual high cloud cover when I joined the crowd of fans at the feet of Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore. I ended up using most of my film shooting their performance, as I focused my Nikon F almost exclusively on the charismatic Morrison.

Over twenty years later, I found the unprinted negatives in storage and began working with them. I realized that eleven of those images showed Jim Morrison in tight focus from head to toe, inspiring a sequence reminiscent of a Muybridge movement study, or a film clip. At that time digital photography was just being introduced, which enabled me to begin the project that became the "Jim Morrison Scream Sequence", and eventually, the "Flying Morrison" and "Morrison Rising" photomurals." -- Jim Coke
