John Coltrane at Ralph Gleason's House, 1960
By Jim Marshall
About the image
A stunning black and white portrait of legendary jazz saxophonist John Coltrane at the Berkeley home of music critic Ralph Gleason. Gleason contributed for many years to the San Francisco Chronicle, was a founding editor of Rolling Stone magazine, and was co-founder of the Monterey Jazz Festival.
This image was used on the definitive collection of Coltrane’s music The Prestige Recordings, released by Prestige Records in 1991. The set consists of 16 CDs and includes nearly everything he recorded for the label between 1956 and 1958.
This signed photograph was given to President Barack Obama by Jim Marshall after he heard that Obama was a big fan of both Coltrane. President Obama hand-wrote him a heartfelt thank-you in response, and confessed to also being a fan of Marshall.
Collector's Note:
This is a signed photograph. Jim Marshall’s iconic photographs are now extraordinarily rare, as very few were printed and signed at the time of his passing. A small inventory is still held by the estate. Please contact us for pricing and availability.
