Unlike Johnny Cash, Merle did spend time in Prison. During his stay at San Quentin State Prison he played in the country music band having been inspired by Cash’s 1959 New Years performance at the prison.
Merle is pictured here with one of his Toy Fox Terriers. His dog "Tuffy" is memorialized with an abalone inlay in the headstock of the Fender Custom Shop Merle Haggard Signature Tribute "Tuff Dog" Telecaster guitar.
