Johnny Cash with Cigarette II, Columbia Studios, Los Angeles, CA, 1961
By Leigh Wiener
About the image
Leigh Wiener photographed Johnny Cash in and around Los Angeles in several sessions from 1960 - 1962. During this time Johnny Cash’s career was taking off and he was in the process of moving his family - his first wife Vivian and their four daughters - from Tennessee to California. He had also recently left Sun Records, signing a contract with Columbia Records that allowed him more freedom to record the music he wanted. In 1961 he also starred in his first motion picture, “Five Minutes to Live” for which he also wrote and performed the theme song.
Leigh Wiener’s images were used on three consecutive studio album releases including:
Now Here’s Johnny Cash (June 1961) - Country/Blues/R&R
Hymns From the Heart (June 1962) - Gospel
The Sound of Johnny Cash (August 1962) - Country/Blues/Rockabilly
