Keith Richards and Brian Jones are captured casually walking backstage at the Their Satanic Majesties Request album cover photoshoot in New York City, in September, 1967. The Rolling Stones travelled to New York because the album cover was to be shot using a special 3-D camera which was only available in Mount Vernon Studios in the city. The album was later released with a lenticular cover that changed slightly depending on the angle.
The album's title is a play on the "Her Britannic Majesty requests and requires..." text that appears inside a British passport. Photographer Michael Cooper designed the psychedelic stage scene and photographed the front cover. He had previously assisted artist Peter Blake and the Beatles with the cover of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by providing the studio and various accoutrements for their stage set up in addition to shooting the cover photograph itself.
Release Notes:
Michael Cooper passed away in 1973 leaving a massive personal and professional archive of negatives shot going back to the mid 1960s. Very few, if any photographs had been printed in a commercial fomat by that time, so there are no signed versions available for sale.
The Michael Cooper Estate has released museum-quality limited editions in several sizes and made them available for collectors.
Collector's Notes:
The Michael Cooper Estate photographs are printed to order, so please allow 2-4 weeks for delivery. Each photograph will be numbered and marked by the estate.
Buyers will receive a certificate of authenticity following delivery of their photograph.
