The Rolling Stones - Smoky Stones in Grass, Derbyshire, 1968
By Michael Joseph
About the image
Photographed across two days at the historic Sarum Chase Estate in West London and Swarkestone Hall Pavillion in Derbyshire, the Beggar's Banquet series includes some of the most intricate compositions in all of Rock & Roll photography.
The photographs taken at Swarkestone were initially intended to be used for the front and back covers of the album sleeve, the Sarum Chase images for inside. This image was among the last taken on the second day of shooting. It was intended for the front cover of the album sleeve.
Shortly after this image was taken, the police appeared as a result of a fire reported by a concerned neighbor! They were delighted to discover the Stones posing for pictures instead!
