David Bowie with Hunky Dory Record Sleeve, 1972
By Mick Rock
About the image
David Bowie posing with the original artwork for Hunky Dory in their second photo-shoot in April 1972. The photo was taken at Bowie's home at the edge of London and captures the distance Bowie had gone to change his appearance for this new character named Ziggy. Photographs from this session later appeared on the covers of albums and singles reissued in 1972-73 after his fame grew to new heights.
After the popularity of the Ziggy Stardust performances catapulted him to fame, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, and Hunky Dory all appeared on the Pop charts at the same time.
