Stevie Nicks, Dressing Room Top Hat (Vert), Venice Beach, 1981
By Neal Preston
About the image
This photo was taken in Stevie's condo in Venice Beach, CA during a shoot for People Magazine. Her office was appointed with a massive mirrored vanity with inset lighting like a theatre's backstage dressing room. This shot was taken the same day as the now iconic imagery of Stevie dressed in white with her sleeves blowing over and around her in the wind. Neal has said, "This was the first real one-on-one shoot that we did together. The day was absolutely intoxicating, and the next afternoon a bouquet of flowers arrived at my house with a note thanking me for a "magical shoot." She's a friend for life and one of the most creative people I've ever met."
Stevie once said about the hat: "I bought that top hat in Buffalo, New York. We were on tour and on one of our days off Christine and I went antique shopping. I found that hat in some random little shop. I still have it. It’s at home in a box. I keep everything."
