Jefferson Airplane was a pioneer of the psychedelic rock movement, becoming the first band from the San Francisco scene to garner mainstream commercial and critical success. They got their start at The Matrix, a renovated former pizza shop owned by lead singer Maty Balin, located at 3138 Fillmore Street in San Francisco.
