The Beatles in Rishikesh, India, 1968
By Paul Saltzman
About the image
A colorful group portrait of all the Beatles, their partners, other students at the ashram and their spiritual leader, Maharishi. Everyone is wearing traditional Indian clothing and is adorned with beautiful garlands of red and saffron marigolds. Paul Saltzman was not the official photographer for this photoshoot, rather it was an elder gentleman from the village who used an old wood and brass camera with a cloth cover and a shutter-release cable. The atmosphere was one of celebration, and the Maharishi would repeatedly remind everyone to smile to "let everyone outside the ashram see how happy your meditations are making you!".
