About the image
Musician, poet, and visual artist Patti Smith was a highly influential part of the New York City punk rock movement. Her 1975 debut album Horses inspired a wide-variety of bands, including R.E.M., The Smiths, and The Libertines, among countless others.

"It was pure New York downtown music.... Patti is one of the most intense performers I've ever photographed and when she's on stage, nothing can distract her."
