About the image

An entire plot is revealed in this iconic shot of the Rolling Stones during their infamous set at Altamont. Dramatic stage lighting particularly spotlights the calm before the maelstrom, as Mick Jagger warily keeps his eyes on the agitated Hells Angels surrounding him.

"This photo has become an icon of a seminal event of which John Lennon observed, 'The bubble burst,' and instead of a great party it signaled the beginning of the end of Flower Power itself." - Robert Altman
