The Beatles' arrival at John F. Kennedy Airport was greeted by a large crowd estimated to be three thousand people. The band gave their first live U.S. television performance two days later on The Ed Sullivan Show, watched by approximately seventy-four million viewers. The resulting adulation that followed each and every plane ride came to be known as "Beatlemania."
