The front cover of Shaking The Tree
, Peter Gabriel's first greatest hits album, released in November 1990. The photo session took place at Robert Mapplethorpe’s New York loft studio. At a time when many portrait artists were looking for vulnerability, Mapplethorpe was looking for confidence.
The photo was initially used for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
This print is part of the Peter Gabriel : Album Art Collection
, a series of 15 artworks featuring the album cover imagery from each of Peter Gabriel's solo releases from 1977 to 2010. Peter Gabriel produced this series as fine-art limited edition prints in 2010, coordinating with each of the artists who created the original artworks. Each one is signed by both the artist and Peter Gabriel himself and are available in two size options.
”I’ve always loved artwork and album art. I think it’s been a huge part of what people identify and feel about the music and the records” said Peter Gabriel “I used to love gatefold sleeves…when you would sit with a new record and open it up it was just a precious moment. Now we’ve gone into this digital world a lot of that has been lost. We’ve being looking at ways of getting quality prints of the artwork for a long time and I’m happy now it has happened.”
Both sizes/editions have been hand-signed by Peter Gabriel and embossed with the estate seal of Robert Mapplethorpe.
