Yes, Tales From Topographic Oceans Album Cover, 1997
By Roger Dean
About the image
This was the album cover for Yes' 1974 classic, Tales From Topographic Oceans. Following a visit to Japan in 1973, Roger Dean originally painted this image in watercolor and ink. It was inspired by the patterns in the landscape, a very geomantic vision, each of the rocks having a symbolic significance. Landscape is the most dominant theme in his work but the concentration of symbolic elements in this particular image is unusual.
Through the process of re-working, Roger had the opportunity to add more depth and make many small changes he felt were necessary for the serigraph. Hand-drawing the positives for each color took a great deal more time than the original painting, and this also gave him more time to consider the final image.
