By Sebastian Krüger
About the image
Sebastian Krüger's masterful portrait of iconic Delta blues legend Robert Johnson captures all the mythic energy of the bluesman's otherworldly transformation at the "Crossroads". Guitar in hand, glint in his eye, we can imagine Johnson about to transfix the crowd assembled to hear his potent music. All the more intriguing is the glass of whisky sitting next to him, as legend has it that he died of a poisoned bottle of it in 1938, at the fateful age of 27.
Sebastian Krüger's subjects are generally artists he admires and his portraits, while caricatures, always contain a great deal of kindness while at the same time thoroughly subverting "the world of beautiful appearances." This contradiction is at the heart of Krüger's work, a characteristic that has made him extremely popular with art connoisseurs all over the world.
Each piece is signed and numbered by Sebastian Kruger.
