Susan Derges was born in London in 1955. She studied painting at the Chelsea College of Art and Design and at the Slade School of Art. She then turned to photography, exploring the particular early techniques of camera-less photography - exposing images directly onto photographic paper. Peter Gabriel, an admirer of Susan's work, commissioned her to create the cover image for his 2002 album Up. Since 1992 she has worked from her studio, a converted chapel, in Dartmoor, Devon, England where she continues to create new and innovative work.
