David Bowie - Space Oddity Album Cover, London, 1969
By Vernon Dewhurst
About the image
“I’d often pop up for a smoke and glass of wine and to hear his latest songs and it was there I first heard ‘Space Oddity’. David invited me to his Arts Lab in Beckenham, and I photographed him playing there. When he saw the photographs, he asked me to meet with Calvin Mark Lee at Mercury Records to talk about the cover to his second LP.
The shoot took place in my studio in St. Michael Street, London. Those present included Dr. Calvin Mark Lee of Mercury Records who supplied the Vasarely Op-Art painting as a background to be stripped in later." -- Vernon Dewhurst
Shot using a Hassleblad, on Ektachrome film.
Collector's Notes:
"The originals from the Space Oddity shoot are naturally held by the record company (Warner Music) who have been kind enough to supply me with hi-res files for my records and usage. My copyright is and has always been recognised and accepted."
