This is an original pencil & colored pencil drawing on tracing paper which served as the basis for the final design that appeared as the July, 1948 page of the Esquire Calendar. It also appeared later as the Queen of Spades in a deck of Vargas playing cards. This delightful portrait of a young woman in a bathing suit holding an enormous hat is a classic 1940s Pin Up. She has a bright, beautiful open smile and a playful innocence that captures the essence of the era.
Though published in the late 1940s, this piece was likely finished in 1945-46, as Vargas had already cut ties with Esquire Magazine at this point.
