About the image

Bert Stern wanted more than a historically iconic image of the movie star: "What I wanted from Marilyn Monroe was the nudes because I couldn't think of anything to put on her."

Although Marilyn Monroe was able to transform herself into character for the "Last Sitting" shoot with Bert Stern, there is an air of desperation about these photos as well, a tragic foreshadowing of her death a mere six weeks later.

Exhibition History:
Several photographs from Stern's archive were featured in our exhibition: Marilyn Monroe & James Dean “Forever Young”, February 2009.

Release Notes:
Bert Stern produced museum-quality signed photographs in several sizes as limited editions during his lifetime.
