About the image

Alton Kelley, Victor Moscoco, Rick Griffin, Wes Wilson, and Stanley Mouse, known collectively as The Big Five, were responsible for designing the majority of the best-known and iconic psychedelic posters in San Francisco during the 1960s.

After concert promoters realized that the posters they put up to advertise their shows were being taken home and pinned on walls as art pieces, the Psychedelic Poster movement began in earnest. Within a year or two of their first designs, interest in their work had grown enough that The Big Five launched an exhibition at the Moore Gallery in San Francisco. Each one designed a custom poster for the event. They are pictured here, posing together at the exhibition opening, in July of 1967.
