Jackson Browne, Late For The Sky Album Cover, 1974

The cover design for Jackson Browne's Late for the Sky album released in 1974 was a concept Browne developed based on René Magritte's Empire of Light painting. He included a credit on the album sleeve that said "Cover concept by Jackson Browne if it's all reet with Magritte". It was captured just a short distance from Browne's childhood home in Los Angeles, and featured his own Chevy BelAir, a car reportedly gifted to him by Glen Frey.

Jackson Browne has said on several occasions that this is his favorite album cover design.

The album quickly went Gold (1974) and then Platinum (1989) and it is now widely considered Browne's masterpiece. It won him a Grammy Award in 1975. 

In 2020 the album was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and it was inducted to the National Recording Registry in 2021.

Collector's Note:
A signed, limited edition C-print of this great album cover was produced and featured in our landmark 2004 exhibition The Art of The Album Cover. However, Bob was never fully satisfied with the quality of the color and tone of the C-print reproduction, so he did not actively produce or promote these photographs during his lifetime.

Release Note:
With the advancements in fine art printing in the late 2010s, an archival pigment print has now been able to be produced that finally captures the true tones and richness of the original dye-transfer that was used to create the cover. This archival pigment print IS available as an Estate Authorized limited edition.

One of these limited edition prints was auctioned off at a charity event for SEVA Foundation in 2019, selling for $4,000! Jackson Browne himself has also reportedly purchased one for his own collection!
