About the image
I often used GAF film for shooting photographs although I’m not sure why. Perhaps because you could push it to produce an effect that was almost painterly. I took a whole set of Mick, in Holland Park, using this film. The result is several portraits that remind me of Dutch paintings where his faux fur coat seems to blend into the bark of the tree behind him. The shots were taken on an early evening in September 1976 and the light has that glorious golden glow that adds to the dreamy feel of the picture. He then took some of me with my camera. I think these are among my favorite photographs – perhaps because they are of Mick at the height of his beauty, fame and musical powers, yet still an enigma.
