By David Redfern
About the image
John Coltrane playing the soprano saxophone during a live concert performance in London, England, Great Britain, circa 1960.
Coltrane was gifted a soprano sax by Miles Davis while they were on tour in Europe. He was intrigued by the instrument and began playing it at summer club dates. Shortly afterward, he recorded My Favorite Things, playing the soprano sax on one side of the record, and tenor sax on the other. Coltrane later remarked that My Favorite Things was his favorite of his own albums.
