Tom Waits on Miniature Piano, Prairie Sun Recording Studio, CA, 1992 (Color)

About the image
Tom Waits has long been one of the most innovative artists in popular music, garnering critical acclaim and a loyal cult following with his trademark gravelly voice, eclectic stage persona, and experimental sound. In this shot, Waits is seen at his most idiosyncratic, leaning next to a miniature piano with a skull on top of it, and a boombox in the background.
“This particular shot of Tom Waits was taken on August 13, 1992 at Prairie Sun Recording Studio in Cotati, Ca. He had just finished recording Bone Machine at this studio, and the room we shot him in was the room he recorded the record in. It’s a beautiful studio on a chicken farm. When Tom looked at all the tracking rooms, he opted out of those and chose the storage closet to record in.”
