Duane Allman is captured here sitting backstage at the Berkeley Community Theater in January, 1971. The Allman Brothers Band had performed the previous three nights in San Francisco, including two shows at the Fillmore West, and one at Winterland. Duane was in Berkeley visiting his friend John Hammond Jr. backstage before his concert opening for Neil Young. Duane sat and played with John backstage, playing John's National Steel guitar while John played an acoustic.
Jim Marshall had a very special bond with Duane Allman, and was devastated when he died in a motorcycle accident on October 29, 1971. In his first book, which was dedicated to Duane among others, Jim wrote, "the day he died, I walked the streets of San Francisco for about fourteen hours. This is a kid who makes me cry, and I still do sometimes...In all my life there are few people I’ve met like him.”

Jim Marshall Photography LLC selected this photograph, along with four other Allman Brothers images, to be made available to collectors for the first time in July, 2021. This collection was released as a tribute to the band, who Jim Marshall was close with and photographed on many occasions, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of At Fillmore East, released in July, 1971.
