About the image

"Shortly after Monterey Pop, Marshall took Janis Joplin for a photo session over to where Grace Slick lived...Marshall wanted to photograph the two queens of San Francisco rock. Grace Slick was the unequivocal leading lady of the new rock and Janis Joplin had just knocked everybody dead at Monterey and was clearly the next contender...There were no stylists, no hair and makeup people...just a couple of young women goofing around for a friend with a camera. It was the only time those two would pose together." --Joel Selvin, from The Haight: Love, Rock and Revolution.
