John Lee Hooker, Mad Man Blues Album Cover Outtake, 1981
By Joel Brodsky
About the image
This shot of Delta blues legend John Lee Hooker was an outtake from his 1981 album, Mad Man Blues . Born the son of a sharecropper, Hooker, despite being illiterate, was a prolific lyricist. And his use of the electric guitar tied together the Delta blues with the emerging post-war psychedelic music scene, influencing such classic rock artists as Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton, among countless others.
