Malcolm Poynter attended Goldsmiths College and the Royal College of Art. His diverse career as one of Britain's top artists creating fantastic sculptures and theatre performances spans several decades. He is a contemporary of Antony Gormley and like Gormley his work often uses casts of himself. Although not as well known outside the artworld as Gormley, he spent much of his early career on the art school lecture circuit and the influence of his stimulating talks resonates in the work of many sculptors of today.
He is greatly admired by Peter Gabriel who collaborated with him in 1982 on an experimental video, a still from which was used as the cover for Peter's fourth solo album Security.
Malcolm is currently located in Austria and works from his own studio, a converted former garden centre, where he is creating a permanent exhibition. His influence can still be seen in the work of a number of younger British sculptors.
