About the image
David Bowie began playing the saxophone as a child went on to play the instrument on a number of his songs. An image from this session appeared on the back cover of Bowie's 1973 album Pin-Ups, on which he played all the tenor and alto sax.

Mick Rock first met David Bowie in early 1972. From the first photo shoot developed a two-year relationship as Bowie’s official photographer. During this time, Rock documented the "rise and fall" of Ziggy Stardust, and shot promotional films, album jackets, posters, artwork, thousands of photographs, and music videos. This session was taken during the summer of 1973, shortly after the "retirement" of Ziggy Stardust.
