David Bowie Seated, Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles, 1972
By Mick Rock
About the image
David Bowie was immediately taken with the Beverly Hills Hotel, and told Mick Rock that he'd like to take up residency there. Soon after they arrived, they began a photo-shoot as a test shoot for The Jean Genie video they were preparing to film in the coming days. The mood was Ziggy as a kind of "Hollywood street-rat".
Bowie was in the middle of the Ziggy Stardust US tour, and played an excellent show at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium (recorded and later released as Santa Monica '72) while in Los Angeles. He then went up North to San Francisco where he played a show at the Winterland Ballroom and recorded The Jean Genie music video with Mick Rock as well.
