After graduating from Cambridge in 1959, Freeman became a professional photographer, with assignments for the Sunday Times and other magazines.
This photograph of Charlton Heston was taken after his Oscar win for Best Actor in Ben Hur, while he was at once enjoying a successful film career and beginning to speak out publicly in support of the Civil Rights Movement.
