Bloody Nolan Ryan - Texas Rangers, 2005
By Stephen Holland
About the image
Former major-league pitcher Nolan Ryan played in a record-tying 27 seasons. A hard thrower whose pitches were regularly recorded in the 100-mph range, even past the age of 40, Ryan is depicted in this piece as "Bloody Ryan," a reference to his fight with Chicago White Sox third baseman Robin Ventura on August 4, 1993. Ventura had charged the mound after being hit by a pitch and was given quite a beating by the elder statesmen.
