Elvis Presley (1935 – 1977) performs on the opening night of his comeback engagement at The International Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 31, 1969. Elvis had taken an 8 year hiatus from live concert performances, to focus on recording and movie making.
The showroom was daunting: twice as large as any other venue in Las Vegas, with room for 2,000 people. The opening-night audience was filled with Hollywood stars, Vegas entertainers and assorted high rollers, along with rock critics and entertainment reporters from around the country. He performed 57 shows there, usually two a day, between July 31 and August 28, at the newly opened hotel. It is said that this engagement not only restarted his career, but also began the transformation of Las Vegas nightlife.
