Prince, Dhani Harrison & Tom Petty, HOF Performance 2004
By Afshin Shahidi
About the image
Prince performed one of the most stunning and iconic renditions of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" during the 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony (the year he was himself inducted). He performed during the tribute to George Harrison alongside Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Dhani Harrison, and Steve Winwood. His guitar solo from this event is not to be missed, and is an outstanding example of his prowess with the instrument, a fact that is often lost due to his multi-faceted and aesthetically rich persona and performances.
Prince's solo was so powerful that The New York Times headline about the event read "The Day Prince's Guitar Wept the Loudest". Although he did rehearse with the band, according to statements from others who were present, due to some miscommunication among all the various performers, Prince never actually played his solo publicly prior the live performance.
